The Geography Access to Higher Education Diploma is a suitable entrance qualification for the many Earth Science based degrees in Cornwall and throughout the country. It is also a recognised qualification that can help you gain entry into the workplace.

Access courses are designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress on to Higher Education. This course is ideal for those who want to re-train or re-direct their lives into Geology, Geography, Environmental Science, and many other science related university courses. There is a very high level of academic and personal support throughout the course, which can help if you need to combine study with part-time employment and family commitments.
All applicants will be invited to attend an Access Workshop where full course information is given and you will be expected to complete the Initial Assessment and a written exercise.
You will study core modules such as: Geography and Environmental Science and mix with other Sciences such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
You will also need to study modules such as: research skills, exam techniques and ICT.
You will attend college, three days per week over 35 weeks and you are expected to study at least 10-15 hours at home or on campus.
Assessment will take the form of coursework (essays and/or reports), presentations or in class assessments depending on the unit you are studying. This is to ensure you learn how to perform well in each of these assessment methods ahead of progressing to university.
We will teach you how to structure essays, prepare for exams and overcome presentation nerves.
On the access course you will have the opportunity to get support with your academic studies; you will be able to receive support from a range of people and facilities. This includes support from the Learning Resource Centre as well as support for tutors to help facilitate your learning. Support will also be available during some of the College holidays.
We also support you through the university application process with tutorials. These are designed to offer guidance and support throughout the learning process.
Some applicants may be eligible for financial support on this course to assist with childcare, transport etc. The Learner Support Fund is under review and is determined by individual circumstances.
If you are under 24 years of age, you may be eligible for fee remission. Information will be given within the workshops, however if your require more information contact the College your applying for and speak to one of the administration tutors for further details.

You can progress on to various university degrees or other Higher Education programmes. Some students decide to go straight into employment. Previous students have gone onto study: Environmental Science, Ecology, Science, Conservation, Geography etc.
