Access courses are designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress on to Higher Education.

This course has been designed specifically to meet the requirements of universities, who increasingly demand a substantial science and mathematics content in order to enable progression onto an engineering, science or mathematics related degree.

There is a very high level of academic and personal support throughout the course, which can help if you need to combine study with part time employment and family commitments.

You’ll need:

All applicants will be invited to attend an  interview where full course information is given and you will be expected to complete an Initial Assessment.

Applicants who do not hold a GCSE in mathematics or English at grade C or above will be expected to gain these qualifications before or alongside their Access studies. The opportunity to achieve these qualifications will be provided.

A range of modules related to Science, Engineering and Mathematics.


Attendance at the College is required three days per week for one year. You will study a range of units at level 3 (equivalent to A level). Each unit is worth 3 credits. For successful completion of the access course you will need 60 credits overall. The 60 credits are made up of 45 credits from your main subject areas (physics and mathematics) and 15 credits from your core units, which are designed to prepare you for academic study at university level.

Assessment will take the form of coursework, presentation or in class assessments depending on the unit you are studying.

This course is a suitable entrance qualification for the many engineering or  science based degrees in Cornwall and throughout the country. It is also a recognised qualification that can help you gain entry into the workplace.

Several of our students have continued their studies at Cornwall College, selecting courses from within with our range of foundation degrees. These include programmes at our Newquay, St Austell and Camborne sites, Falmouth Marine School and Duchy College Stoke Climsland and Rosewarne.
