You are interested in a career as an IT Technician or Network Engineer and have a keen interest in IT. This course will suit those who want to explore what the IT sector has to offer.
Five GCSEs at grade C or above including English and Maths (or equivalent qualifications).
Mature students will be able to bring life experience and skills as opposed to exam results, but this can be discussed at interview.
Over the 2 years of your course you will study 18 units (9 in each year) including:
- How computers work and how to maintain and fix them
- How networks work and how to set them up
- Creating websites, graphics, spreadsheets and databases
- Employability skills and wider knowledge of business and work environments
A challenging and enjoyable course which is assessed by a combination of practical activities and written assignments throughout.

The BTEC Extended Diploma is the equivalent of three A-levels so your options are many. Traditionally you have three choices in how to move into Web design or development:
- Get a job/apprenticeship as a trainee IT technician or within an IT environment
- Study IT at degree level at a university or affiliated college
Whichever path you choose you will need to be committed and enthusiastic to succeed in this area. Demand for people with good technical IT skills remains high as every workplace employs IT in some way for their business activities.
The average salary for an IT Business Analyst is about £40,000 a year with forecasts predicting 60,000 more jobs becoming available in the next 10 years.
