Engineering remains one of the UK’s most important industries, offering a diverse range of exciting employment opportunities, from design to tool making. During your studies you will learn the principles of engineering so you can then specialise in areas such as manufacturing, plant operations and repair, machining, welding and fabrication
This Level 3 qualification is a full-time course which can run over two years. The programme is equivalent to three A levels on completion of the second year. The course provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills that will prepare you for employment or progression to higher education and degree courses.
The course attracts UCAS points to further your progression onto Higher Education. On successful completion of the course, you can progress onto an Apprenticeship or enter into employment.
The course will develop your knowledge and skills in the design, manufacture and maintenance of engineering products.

You would like to spend a year as a full time student learning the essential skills in engineering, exploring your career options and building core skills.
Three GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including English, and maths.
During the course you will develop your knowledge and skills in the design, manufacture and maintenance of engineering products. You will learn to think like an engineer and acquire logical thinking and critical analysis skills, which will help you develop and prepare you for the workplace.
In the first year you will learn the basics about all aspects of health and safety in the workplace, and develop a broad range of practical skills as you are introduced to all of the machinery used in this industry in our college workshops. You will then be able to develop more core maths and science required for engineering as well as:
• Electrical engineering
• Mechanical engineering
• Welding and fabrication
• Production and manufacturing
• Pneumatics and hydraulics
• CAD and CAM
• 3D printing and modelling
• 3 Phase motors and drives
• PLC programmable logic controllers
In the second year we will also help you develop broader professional skills such as presentation techniques, time management and effective communication strategies. You will also be able to undertake a period of work experience in industry to give you invaluable insight into potential careers.

Chris Ludlow Lecturer Engineering
Chris gained his fabrication apprenticeship through A & P Falmouth and then travelled around Europe working as a fabricator. He started working at Cornwall College in 2008 and teaches fabrication and welding, lathe and mill work and machine maintenance. He is also a qualified assessor.
