Dental Nursing Level 3 Apprenticeship (NEW Standard)

Cornwall College Camborne LEVEL: 3 Social Care & Health

This apprenticeship is suitable for those who are in an employed position as a dental nurse trainee. The course covers a broad range of subjects and will introduce you to essential skills and knowledge to be able to work as a dental nurse.

You need to be working in a dental practice and have a C or grade 4 in both maths and English. If you are not currently employed, we may be able to help you find an employer to start the apprenticeship. Please contact our apprenticeship recruitment team for advice on 0330 123 4785 or e-mail apprenticeships@cornwall.ac.uk All applicants will receive an initial assessment and a personal interview to check suitable for the apprenticeship.

You will be required to attend college on 1 day per week to study the following units:

  • Emergency First Aid Skills
  • Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Prepare and maintain environment, instruments, and equipment for clinical dental procedures
  • Offer information and support to individuals on the protection of their oral health
  • Provide chair-side support during the assessment of patients’ oral health
  • Contribute to the production of dental images
  • Provide chair-side support during the prevention and control of periodontal disease and caries and the restoration of cavities

An essential element of the programme is that you must achieve the Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing (City and Guilds), which consists of a portfolio of evidence and observations of you working in the dental practice by an assessor, plus four exams. On successful completion of this qualification you will be entered for the End Point Assessment (EPA), carried out by an independent third party which consists of two synoptic assessments: a project which links and tests skills and knowledge in a holistic way and an interview. Achievement of the EPA will be graded as a pass or a distinction.

Successful completion of the course will enable you to become a qualified dental nurse and register with the General Dental Council.
