This programme is designed for individuals wishing to study health and social care in the community. It is for one year at Level 4 and is the first year of a foundation or honours degree.
The modules studied include Sociological Perspectives, Professional Practice, Personal & Employability Skills Development, Psychological Perspectives of Development, Values & Ethics and Keeping Children, Young People & Adults at Risk Safe.
You will be given the opportunity to enhance your knowledge base as the emphasis is on supporting future careers in the health and social care field and for further study.
The programme provides a wide range of teaching styles, assessment and work-related learning. Assessment is through assignments and presentations.
As part of your study you will be expected to undertake a minimum of 60 hours work related learning in a voluntary or paid capacity.
This should be in a health and social care environment. You will need to have a current Disclosure and Barring Service check in order to undertake this work.
The programme is over two days a week for one academic year. Students will benefit from the Health and Social Care department’s excellent links with agencies and organisations that specialise in health and community services and projects.

48 UCAS points from AS and A-Levels (at least 32 points must be at A2-level) or relevant level 3 qualification, ie BTEC National Diploma / BTEC Extended Diploma - PPP Grades required (specific unit grades may be requested). Access to HE Diplomas in a relevant subject - 45 credits at level 3 (specific unit grades may be requested). Plus GCSEs at grade C/grade 4 or above in English Language and Mathematics: alternatives at Level 2 may be considered. Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply.

Indicative Modules Year 1
Sociological Perspectives (20 credits)
This module introduces you to the major competing sociological theories and encourages you to develop a critical evaluation of them. It will help you to gain an awareness of social influences such as the family, gender, class and ethnic groupings. You will also consider poverty and social exclusion, and develop an understanding of current possible solutions to social problems.
Psychological Perspectives of Development (20 credits)
This module looks at how the individual develops and grows. You will be introduced to the various influences which shape growth and development, and psychological aspects. The module also covers the main theoretical explanations which seek to explain human growth and development.
Values and Ethics (20 credits)
This module focuses on the values underpinning good professional care practice and the influence of personal values on practice. You will have the opportunity to explore ethical principles in relation to care work and relate these to the dilemmas you face in your workplace. The module will enable you to examine a range of practice guidelines and the relationship between personal, professional and agency values. This module relates closely to the Professional Practice: Skills for Health and Social Care.
Personal and Employability Skills Development (20 credits)
This module will assist you in gaining essential professional skills and develop transferable skills. You will also be helped with skills in career development, personal presentation and team work.
Professional Practice: Skills for Health & Social Care (20 credits)
This module will enable students to extend their understanding of interpersonal and communication skills used in the work setting and to apply these to roles and responsibilities within their chosen service area.
Keeping Children, Young People and Adults at Risk Safe (20 credits)
This module will develop the skills and knowledge to identify types of abuse and its effect upon the individual. Knowledge of the legislative framework pertaining to safeguarding and the importance of inter-agency collaboration will be developed. A range of strategies for empowering children, young people and adults at risk will be explored.
