This agriculture programme widens your knowledge of the agricultural industry, with a view to managing agricultural operations after graduation. The programme provides a thorough understanding of modern farming production systems and an in-depth knowledge of the underlying scientific and technological principles. The FdSc Agriculture is delivered using a combination of approaches to enable the acquisition of required academic knowledge. Practical farm management is also integral and the programme benefits from industry-wide support. This course is available with a Science Gateway. Which is ideal for those who would like to study any of the science-based Foundation Degrees (FdSc) we offer, but don’t have the right qualifications or grades to do so.

Agriculture Certificate

Level 2 • Full-time • Duchy College Stoke Climsland


Agriculture is arguably the most important industry in the world and without the food, clothing and fibres it provides, we simply wouldn’t survive. Now an industry with highly-mechanised processes, employment in this sector goes beyond farm workers and managers to engineers, consultants and scientists. This is a full-time course for anyone who wants a broad introduction to the agricultural industry. Throughout the course you will develop skills and knowledge in a range of farming disciplines and technologies. You can expect to develop a wide range of skills across the range of farm enterprises. You are also required to complete 150 hours of work experience as a core element of your study programme, providing invaluable exposure to the industry. We are very proud of our Home Farms at Bicton College and Duchy College Stoke Climsland, which both incorporate dairy herds, the milk from which is sold to Saputo UK (formerly Dairy Crest) and is used to make Cathedral City cheddar. Bicton Home Farm totals 147 hectares used for grass and crop production, as well as a central area of parkland, on which we support a flock of 120 Mule ewes. We have many upgrades and improvements planned. Duchy College Home Farm totals 240 hectares of farmed land, including grassland, forage maize, winter wheat and spring barley, a flock of 100 February lambing Highlander cross Texels, a flock of 100 pure Highlanders, as well as three breeding sows and their piglets. We are currently developing a new 200 cow dairy unit.

Land-Based Studies (Agriculture) City & Guilds Diploma

If you love everything to do with agriculture and have your sights set on working within the agriculture industry, then this is the course for you and will be your first step in your career. The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about practical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time on the college farm, learning by doing as you work on a range of tasks with the livestock, machinery, crops and farm estate. Our working farm features 260 head dairy herd, 200 ewes, and a small number of pigs, whose piglets we rear and sell through a local butcher. We are also in the process of building the Future Farm. There really has never been a more exciting time to be part of agriculture at Duchy. You’ll be working with all the livestock on the farm: cattle, sheep and pigs. You’ll be performing tasks that help to maintain their accommodation, health treatments and selection for breeding and for sale. You will be developing all of the essential skills you need to assist with the care of animals. You will also gain an understanding of wildlife and conservation in the local area. Alongside this, you will assist with a range of estate maintenance tasks, like fencing and maintenance of structures. You will also be driving our tractors and making use of our tractor driving area, as well as on the farm. As a Level 1 course, this diploma is all about introducing you to the agriculture industry and developing your essential skills. You’ll be learning from experienced professionals, who are there to give you the very best start to your career.

Without food we simply would not survive and the growing world population is making increasing demands on the agricultural industry and the people that work within it. Agriculture makes a significant contribution to the economy in the South West of England and provides a wide range of exciting job opportunities. Level 2 is an intermediate level programme equivalent to GCSE grade 5-9. The programme is aimed at individuals with a keen interest in agriculture and a desire to develop a greater understanding of the knowledge and skills required to be successful in the industry. You’ll have the opportunity to develop your confidence, agricultural knowledge and practical skills, alongside more general skills required to gain employment or to continue your academic study. Many of these skills will also be transferable to a range of other land based sectors to widen career opportunities. You will be learning from experienced agriculturalists both inside the classroom and on the college farm, it could be milking our herd of dairy cows, lambing our flock of sheep or ploughing a field before we plant our maize crop. You will spend some of your course time working alongside the farm staff, following the farm activities as you progress through the year, you could be selecting ewes for breeding in September, fencing in October, calving cows in February or shearing a ewe in May. You will have the opportunity to develop your confidence, knowledge and practical skills, alongside more general skills required to gain employment or to continue in education. As a level 2 course this diploma is all about introducing you to the agricultural industry or developing the skills that you already have to give you the very best opportunity to move onto a more technical agriculture course or enter the industry as an apprentice.
