Animal Management Diploma

Level 3 • Full-time • Animal management & Veterinary Nursing department


Our Level 3 Animal Management Diploma at Duchy College is an exciting stepping stone on your way to a career working with animals. This course can be studied as an one year Advanced Diploma in Animal Management Diploma or as a two year Extended Advanced Diploma in Animal Management, and we will work with you to decide which option will be the best choice for you. Our state of the art animal management centres at Duchy College Rosewarne and Duchy College Stoke Climsland provide dedicated access to a huge range of animal species such as small mammals, exotics , birds, aquatics and farm animals. Learners will also have the opportunity to visit and access real industry environments including Dartmoor Zoological Park. Completing this course will allow you to start your career in the animal care industry or prepare you for University. Caring for animals can be an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career; from working in kennels and catteries to wildlife rescue, there are a wide range of careers available on successful completion of your course. If you find an area of study you love whilst completing the course you can choose to go on to further study at University and qualify as an animal nutritionist, behaviourist or conservationist. We offer a Zoo Animal Management pathway at Level 3, which iis perfect if you would like a career caring for animals in a zoo-based setting. We work in partnership with Dartmoor Zoological Park to ensure you gain the practical, real-life experience that employers look for. Please note: In Year One of your Level 3 course you will be required to complete 150 hours of Work Experience. In Year Two you will be required to complete 315 hours as part of an Industry Placement.

Animal Care Certificate

Level 2 • Full-time • Animal management & Veterinary Nursing department


This Level 2 Animal Care course is available both Duchy college campuses, which are each home to a large variety of animals. This course is ideal if you have some interest in animals and would like to learn about working in the industry, or progressing onto further studies. It is good starting point for your career with animals. Caring for animals can be an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career. From working in kennels and catteries to pet shops, rescue centres or sanctuaries, there is a wide range of careers available on successful completion of your course. With access to animal collections on campus you will gain the practical training you need to pursue a career in this exciting industry. You will study a combination of theory and practical work, and can expect to spend time both at college and in a work experience placement of your choice. You will also have the opportunity to go on field trips to local zoos, wildlife parks and animal sanctuaries. You will need to purchase PPE to wear during your practical sessions. BSc (Hons) Applied Animal Health Level 6

Level 6 • Full-time • Animal management & Veterinary Nursing department


This programme provides progression for graduates of the FdSc in Veterinary Nursing or Animal Health and Management, or equivalent programmes. It is a contemporary and relevant Level 6 qualification, run over one year for full time students or two years for part time students, based mainly at our Stoke Climsland campus. The programme incorporates a range of core and optional modules which ensure relevance for students who intend to work in any part of the animal health or veterinary industry. In addition, some option strands will be primarily aimed at Veterinary Nursing graduates, enabling them to develop specialist areas of interest and facilitate progression within practice. You will explore current issues in the industry and are encouraged to investigate areas of your interest. An Honours Project is completed as part of the year. The modules are closely linked to industry and students will be encouraged to support their learning with appropriate work experience. Graduates of this programme will be at the forefront of an ever changing world, where animal welfare is increasingly seen as paramount, and will be able to make a real and meaningful impact in this area.

Animal Care and Welfare Assistant Apprenticeship

Level 2 • Work-based • Animal management & Veterinary Nursing department


During this Level 2 Animal Care Apprenticeship you will learn to develop and demonstrate competence in a range of areas, enabling you to progress onto the Level 3 course. If you are passionate about animals and would love a job where you work with them every day, then a career in animal management is for you. As an apprentice you will work with a range of animals and learn more about their health, welfare, handling and supervision, as well as earning money at the same time. Working with animals can be an extremely rewarding career, where no two days are the same and you can gain hands-on training with this Level 2 apprenticeship. To study this course you must have relevant employment within the animal care sector. If you need help to find an employer, please get in touch. You can expect to spend one day every two weeks on campus for 12 - 18 months and the remaining days in the workplace with your employer. While on campus you will benefit from our extensive animal management collections which, depending on where you study, includes lemurs, meerkats, goats, ferrets, exotic animals, farm animals and aquatics. Veterinary Nursing Diploma

Level 3 • Work-based • Animal management & Veterinary Nursing department


Our veterinary nursing teaching areas are designed to simulate a veterinary practice. We have a radiography room, laboratory, kennel area and operating theatre. We have many pieces of equipment that you would expect to find in a veterinary practice such as microscopes, anesthetic machines, operating tables and a large variety of surgical instruments. We also have a range of mannequins, from life-size Labradors to no so life-size ponies and with working farms and equestrian centres you will also have access to animals seen in large animal practices. As a veterinary nurse you will provide support to sick and injured animals who are receiving treatment in a veterinary practice and provide expert nursing care. You will help to educate owners on maintaining the health of their pets and carry out a range of medical treatments under veterinary supervision. Knowing that you have helped nurse animals back to full health is one of the most rewarding careers.

This Level 3 Zoo Animal Management Diploma is perfect if you would like a career caring for animals in a zoo-based setting. Animal management departments on site at Duchy College Stoke Climsland and Bicton College will provide you with practical experience, you will also undertake one day a week work experience at Dartmoor Zoological Park, where you will work with the keepers and the education team. You will love getting hands-on experience at Dartmoor Zoological Park or our animal management centres on campus at Bicton and Duchy. You'll also have the opportunity to take part in field trips in the UK, Europe or our life-changing trip to Africa.

City & Guilds Dog Grooming Diploma Level 3

You will gain the practical skills and knowledge that are important for working as a professional dog groomer.
