Plant Operations - Groundworks Certificate

Plant operations is the broad term referring to the operation and driving of heavy plant equipment such as, excavators, dumpers, rollers and telescopic handlers to name a few. Groundworks is the specific job role of preparing the ground using some of these machines within a construction, civil engineering, roads, railways or landscaping project. In order to work on a construction site you will need to gain your Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) certification. On top of that you will gain tickets to prove you are skilled and experienced in operating and maintaining a wide range of specialist large plant machinery. To work in the industry you will need to achieve the Level 2 qualification. On this Level 2 course, you will learn how to operate a variety of equipment including excavators, forklifts, dumpers and road rollers.

The Construction Industry is a growing sector in the UK. There are over 3000 Construction companies based in Cornwall alone, employing 30,000 workers. In the last 5 years over £2 billion has been spent on Construction projects in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, with a further £1.3 billion to be invested over the next few years. There will always be a need for skilled workers within this sector. The BTEC Level 1 in Construction is aimed at those with little or no experience in construction. It is your starting point to an interesting and varied career within the Construction Industry. Learners will produce a portfolio of work, delivered through both theory and practical sessions. These practical sessions will take place in our fully equipped workshop. You will also gain plant operating experience by driving our machines on our purpose built site. You will undertake practical training in plant operating skills on an approved CPCS test site. You will also need to supply or purchase your own PPE and contribute towards CSCS and CPCS test costs.

Gas Engineering Apprenticeship

If you are a practical person, who enjoys a challenge, problem solving and making a real difference in people’s lives, then a career as a gas engineer could well be the path for you. You will spend time learning gas theory here with us at Cornwall College covering all aspects from natural gas combustion to gas appliance installation.
