Squirrel Management for Conservation

This course is suitable for landowners, gamekeepers, pest controllers, farmers, arborists and those involved in land/forestry management The course will give you a working knowledge of the legislation surrounding grey and red squirrels and practical methods of managing the grey squirrel. Upon successful completion of the course you will be obtain a certificate to prove your knowledge, understanding and competence of squirrel management. The course is held over two days with the first day mainly classroom based covering legislation, ecology of both the grey and red squirrel. The principles of available management methods for the grey squirrel. Survey methods and identifying the presence of the grey squirrel. Setting traps and the laws surrounding trapping and where to put them for maximum impact. Shooting and the basic principles of marksmanship. The second day will be mainly field based putting the theory from the previous session into practice. Carrying out survey for evidence of the squirrels, the placement of traps and setting of the most commonly used traps on the market that are used for squirrel control. Setting up bait stations and ensuring the area is safe, the gun is suitable and the shooting is accurate.

Gamekeeping Diploma

Gamekeeping has changed significantly over the years and while you will still be responsible for the husbandry of both reared and wild game for shooting, your time will also be spent helping to shape the countryside and protecting its species. This agricultural course delivers a thorough understanding of modern agricultural crop and animal production systems and the underlying scientific and technological principles to equip students to manage and support sustainable agricultural businesses in the complex and dynamic rural economy. This is a very broad and challenging remit, and consequently the course is designed to develop a breadth of expertise across a range of sectors. The innovative application of science and technology to agriculture will be even more critical, with the likely withdrawal of direct subsidies to the sector and threat to existing markets for some products associated with ‘Brexit’. As a recognised centre of agricultural knowledge exchange excellence through the activities of Bicton and Duchy College’s Rural Business School (RBS), which is closely engaged with the industries, professions and organisations involved in the global agri-food chain and the UK rural economy, there is the capacity to develop students’ skills to play a key role in regional and national agricultural production systems. Students will understand the underlying science and economics of sustainable crop and animal production systems and their impact on environmental quality. They will be able to produce solutions that take into account the balance between crop and animal production, economic and social needs as well as environmental protection. They will achieve this through the formulation, testing and drawing of conclusions from hypotheses, solving problems through novel research techniques and the communication of ideas and technical management solutions to different audiences. This approach has been ratified by a large sample of employers across agriculture and its ancillary industries, representing regional national and international interests

We are the region’s largest land-based education and training provider with both campuses located in the heart of the countryside, surrounded by rolling hills and working farm land. This course is perfect for you if you want to develop your technical knowledge and practical skills in order to gain a better understanding of the management of different agricultural enterprises, or as an alternative to A-levels and gain university entry. You can expect to be in college three to four days a week and gain a wide variety of experience from practical work on the College farm and in association with our industry partners, which include Rothamstead Research, who provide unique research capabilities for the UK. We are the only agricultural college in the country where students take an active role in first cut silage making. Our Duchy campus is home to Future Farm, a £10 million scheme including a state-of-the-art dairy unit, the campus occupies a 367-hectare estate with dairy, beef, sheep, arable and forage crops, plus a range of dry and wet habitats typical of the area. We also have an impressive portfolio of up-to-date farm machinery.

If you are interested in specialising in the management of wildlife and the countryside, this programme can provide you with the relevant skills to work in the industry. The programme includes a work experience module which will give you hands-on knowledge and an insight into employment in the sector. The programme is studied two days a week with a combination of classroom theory sessions and practical sessions in the field, giving experience of: wildlife surveying and monitoring skills, practical conservation techniques and environmental education. The field sessions are supported by a range of taught sessions, tutorials, seminars and visits; learning in a friendly environment with experts. The programme includes many visits to a wealth of diverse habitats such as heathlands, woodlands, uplands, coastal and freshwater habitats. You will also have the opportunity to carry out an individual piece of research which can be linked to one of the many organisations assisting with this programme. The programme has been designed in close consultation with the conservation industry, making it extremely relevant for those planning a career in conservation and countryside management.
