FdSc Horticulture

Horticulture is a modern, professional vocation that influences our environment, how we eat, how we relax, our health, life expectancy and well-being. This programme is offered at the world renowned Eden Project in Cornwall and has been designed specifically to allow you to explore many aspects of horticulture including applied science, sustainability and design. It provides opportunities to gain and reflect on practical experience in two distinct work placements. The programme will also provide you with the skills and experience to prepare for an interesting, exciting and rewarding career which embraces tradition, technology and innovation. Both the programme of study and student experience are greatly enhanced through the collaboration between Cornwall College and the Eden Project. The range of resources including Eden’s own plant collections, growing environments, nursery and dedicated teaching facilities, coupled with the nationally renowned micro-propagation research facility, provide a world-class platform from which this exciting and stimulating programme will be delivered. You will quickly become integrated within the Eden Project and, in addition to attending the carefully designed taught modules, will have the opportunity to apply and develop a wide range of practical skills by participating in activities in the tropical and Mediterranean biomes, the outdoor garden and nursery crop production facility. As well as benefiting from working alongside Eden’s skilled and specialist horticulturalists, you will also undertake a work placement within another commercial enterprise. In the final year of your study you will undertake a piece of novel research, for which it is encouraged to make full use of the available facilities to explore industry-related issues, that will enhance your CV on successful completion of the course.

This honours degree final year is designed for people with a strong interest in the environment who would like to develop their scientific skills and knowledge base. You can progress to this one-year programme once you have successfully completed a science-related foundation degree or equivalent qualification. As part of this programme you will choose optional modules which allow you to specialise in your particular areas of interest choosing from wildlife crime; environmental economics and sustainability; environmental investigation; and environmental strategy and marketing. You will also design and carry out a research project in which you will investigate specific aspects of the environment. You will study a core module in environmental impact assessment and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). This programme will also provide you with an insight into the business world and the practices of organisations involved in environmental work.

The level 3 Site Carpentry qualification are for learners who are interested in developing the specific technical and professional skills that can lead to meaningful employment in the construction industry as a site carpenter. Patisserie and Bakery Skills Diploma

Level 3 • Full-time • Cornwall College St Austell


If you can’t get enough of cakes, pastry, bread and you have your heart set on becoming a Patisseire this is the course for you to hone your skills using a selection of techniques building on your existing knowledge, to enable advanced techniques. The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about practical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time in our dedicated pastry kitchen, preparing a range of delicious baked goods, which can be sold in our little shop. You’ll be looking at everything and producing delights from the world of pastry: fermented dough and batter products, petits fours, paste products, hot cold and frozen desserts, biscuit cake and sponges, chocolates, and as you progress, you can let your imagination run wild and produce a showpiece. To get you ready and prepared for work you will also undertake food safety supervision, supervision in the professional kitchen, sustainability and gastronomy. Our kitchens are well equipped and have all that you need to have an experience, to get you ready, to advance in the world of pastry.
