Horticulture & Landscape Supervisor Apprenticeship

If you are passionate about plants and fascinated by ­flowers then a career in horticulture is the right choice for you and an apprenticeship is a great way to earn money while learning new skills at the same time. There is a wide range of careers available in this sector including employment in garden retailing, plant nurseries, edibles production, landscaping, parks and gardens, and turf care. Our apprenticeships are designed to help you focus your skills and decide which career path is best for you. An apprenticeship will allow you to earn money while you are studying. In order to start your apprenticeship in horticulture you can either join our Level 3 apprenticeship, depending on your GCSE results, or you can choose one of our Level 2 courses. Horticulture has a huge part to play in our day-to-day lives, from the fruit and vegetables that we eat to the turf we play sports on, all the way through to the flowers that we plant in our gardens and use to brighten up our homes. Horticulture & Landscape Operative Intermediate Apprenticeship

Level 2 • Work-based • Horticulture, Floristry & Arboriculture department


This course is the perfect starting point for someone who wants to pursue a career in horticulture. With over 300,000 people employed in horticulture in the UK, the industry covers a wide range of general and more specialist careers. Amenity horticulture – The design, construction, management and maintenance of the plants and facilities within a range of gardens (private, historical, botanic, public parks and green spaces). Production horticulture – Growing ornamental plants, flower and tree production (including retail nursery outlets) and food production. Sports turf – its construction and ongoing maintenance. This course is very much orientated towards providing learners with the building blocks of plant-based practical skills and knowledge, giving you the perfect starting point to your career. This course is perfect for you if you are starting your career in horticulture or you have completed a one year full-time horticulture course already or A Levels at college. Alternatively you could already be in employment with a suitable employer and want to increase your knowledge and skills, as well as attaining a recognisable level of educational achievement. Your employer will also undertake regular appraisals in order to ensure that you are maintaining good progress through the apprenticeship. Throughout the course you will be required to keep a learning journal, which is a diary of your work-based experiences and activities. There will also be the creation of a plant portfolio. To complete the course, there will be an assessment day (End Point Assessment) where you will be required to carry out a range of practical tasks, complete a multiple choice question paper and have a professional discussion with the assessor confirming your knowledge and understanding of the industry and your job role. The employer must be able to provide the range of on-the-job training required, and this will be assessed at the application stage.

Horticulture is a modern, professional vocation that influences our environment, how we eat, how we relax, our health, life expectancy and well-being. This programme is offered at the world renowned Eden Project in Cornwall and has been designed specifically to allow you to explore many aspects of horticulture including applied science, sustainability and design. It provides opportunities to gain and reflect on practical experience in two distinct work placements. The programme will also provide you with the skills and experience to prepare for an interesting, exciting and rewarding career which embraces tradition, technology and innovation. Both the programme of study and student experience are greatly enhanced through the collaboration between Cornwall College and the Eden Project. The range of resources including Eden’s own plant collections, growing environments, nursery and dedicated teaching facilities, coupled with the nationally renowned micro-propagation research facility, provide a world-class platform from which this exciting and stimulating programme will be delivered. You will quickly become integrated within the Eden Project and, in addition to attending the carefully designed taught modules, will have the opportunity to apply and develop a wide range of practical skills by participating in activities in the tropical and Mediterranean biomes, the outdoor garden and nursery crop production facility. As well as benefiting from working alongside Eden’s skilled and specialist horticulturalists, you will also undertake a work placement within another commercial enterprise. In the final year of your study you will undertake a piece of novel research, for which it is encouraged to make full use of the available facilities to explore industry-related issues, that will enhance your CV on successful completion of the course.

Based at Cornwall’s Eden Project, the BSc (Hons) Horticulture Garden & Landscape Design has been specifically developed to provide industry competent horticulturalists, who have significant design capabilities and a detailed understanding of horticulture science. On this unique programme you will develop skills valuable to numerous sectors of the horticultural industry both in the UK and abroad. Eden’s diverse and specialist plant collections, nurseries and growing facilities, dedicated laboratory and design studio, coupled with Duchy College’s nationally renowned micro propagation research facility, provide a world class study platform. A diverse team of subject specialists supports you in your studies. This includes plant pathologists, botanists, ecologists, garden designers, artists, landscape architects and horticulturalists, many of whom partner private practice with their teaching commitments. Students under the tutelage of members of the current teaching team have won numerous awards including the Prince of Wales Trophy for Sustainable Horticulture last year, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Young Designer of the Year three times in the last five years and the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) Student Designer of the Year Award three times in the past six years, the latest in 2015. You will also embrace sustainable business practice and develop skills in planting design and design communication, using both traditional and digital media (no prior experience required). In the core garden and landscape design modules, innovative and imaginative design practice is encouraged from day one. Through real or ‘live’ projects you will learn how to create stimulating and thought-provoking spaces in a variety of locations – from private gardens to public landscapes. Clients who students have worked with recently include Truro Cathedral, The Pengersick Castle Trust, The Eden Project, The Leonard Cheshire Disability Trust and the Potager Garden.
