Forest School Leadership Certificate

This rewarding qualification is designed to provide you with the practical skills, learning and development theory as well as the essential woodland ecology and management understanding needed to plan and deliver forest school programmes. The qualification prepares you to plan and deliver forest school activities for children, young people or adults in an outdoor learning environment. Successful completion of this course will provide you with the qualification required to gain employment as a forest school leader, in a school environment with outdoor education providers or as independent practitioner. This course is designed for people who wish to teach in further education, community education, work-based learning, offender learning and similar public sector and voluntary settings. Horse Care

Level 2 • Full-time • Equine department


This one year Level 2 Horse Care course is for anyone wishing to start a career within the equine industry. This course gives an insight into some of the diverse areas of employment available in the equine sector developing your skills to support your career goals. Through City & Guilds we offer two pathways, a riding and a non-riding option to support you achieving this qualification. Both pathways offer the opportunity to ride the College horses depending on riding ability but only riding pathway students will be assessed on their riding, receive regular ridden training and be encouraged to work towards British Horse Society qualifications. The non-riding option students have equal access to the horses but for other purposes due to option choices. Extra activities to support your learning are: Taking part in student competitions Guest speakers Work experience in the equine industry Meaningful engagement and involvement with employers Study Tour - Please note that your study tour incurs a residential stay and an extra cost as do some trips. Equine Groom Apprenticeship Level 2

Level 2 • Work-based • Equine department


In order to start your apprenticeship in horse care you will need to join the Level 2 course and learn the basic skills needed to progress on to Level 3. Apprenticeships allow you to work while gaining a nationally recognised qualification at the same time, so why not combine your love of horses with earning money? Over the course of 15-18 months, you will be working in paid employment within the equine industry and you will spend one day every two weeks during term time at college. You’ll study a wide range of subjects around the care of all different types of horses. If you ride or do not ride, don’t worry – there are specialised routes that you can take which include riding, non-riding, racing, breeding or driving. Both Bicton College and Duchy Stoke Climsland capuses are located in beautiful countryside and provide dedicated equestrian facilities, which include indoor and outdoor schools and working yards. Here you will have the opportunity to practice your skills in preparation for the end point practical assessments. Expect to spend time away from your employer on Day release with practical and theory delivery helping you to prepare for your EPA (End Point assessment) with the support of your work coach. Assignments will also be set as well as various classroom activities, workshops and tasks to help you gain the skills and knowledge needed alongside support and training from your employer in order to prepare you for a career in the equine industry. Remote and Blended delivery – If you live too far away from the college to attend college each week then we can arrange for you to go onto a remote programme of delivery and assessment with more one to one support by your work coach and assessor. MSc Equitation Science

The welfare of equines used and cared for by humans is an area of increasing scrutiny. As a result there is a need for evidence based practice within equestrianism, and a requirement for highly trained and skilled scientists and practitioners who can assist in the understanding of the horse-human interactions and associated expectations. This MSc considers not only the use of equines within mainstream equestrianism, but also in allied industries such as in conservation projects, therapy riding, public services and entertainment. This MSc Equitation Science is a higher-level qualification that allows those with a good knowledge of equine science to further develop and focus their skills and to advance their knowledge of the science and practice underpinning equitation. During the course you will quickly appreciate the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to this complex and continually developing area. As a full-time student, you will study six taught modules covering key aspects of equitation science including equine behaviour, training, psychology, nutrition, management, human attributes and technological developments. You will also gain a thorough appreciation of ethical and sustainable equitation and examine contemporary issues within equitation science. Modules are continuously updated to incorporate recent research findings and reflect current thinking. This programme also offers you the opportunity to study a specific aspect of equitation practice in-depth as, having completed the taught modules, you will then conduct a three-month research project of your choice culminating in your dissertation. This programme offers you the opportunity to study a subject that truly inspires and engages you. You will advance and expand your skills in a supportive and personal environment. You will be taught by staff that are not only academically acclaimed and well connected on an international level, but also accessible and genuinely interested in helping you to develop your potential and achieve personal goals. Nursing CAVA Access To HE Diploma

The Access to Nursing programme is designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress on to a range of health and social care related Higher Education degree programmes. Validated by CAVA, this is a recognised qualification for progression by universities. The course is challenging and you will in effect be studying the equivalent of 3 A levels in 9 months as opposed to 2 years. Therefore full attendance and absolute commitment is required to allow you to fully maximise your learning opportunities. If you are a proactive individual who is determined to realise their potential as a professional in the health care sector, then this pathway is for you. The course runs from September until the end of June/early July, 2 days per week. The course may also run 2 evenings and 1 day per week (subject to course numbers). This is a challenging course and it is expected that students will complete a minimum of 15 hours of independent study each week. Students may access college facilities on the days that they are not taught with some evening study available. Please also be advised that most universities require work experience to complement your UCAS application-therefore it is highly recommended that you are working within the health care sector in either a voluntary or paid capacity. Bee Keeping Introduction

The Basic Bee Keeping Part 1 is a 2 term course of 36 hours providing a grounding in beekeeping. This course aims to get you started before getting your bees. The course is an excellent grounding for those wishing to keep bees and involves lectures, practical demonstrations, sharing of experiences along with answers to those unsure of whether to keep bees or not. All teaching takes place at Rosewarne where West Cornwall Beekeepers Association has an outdoor apiary.
