Veterinary Nursing Diploma

Our veterinary nursing teaching areas are designed to simulate a veterinary practice. We have a radiography room, laboratory, kennel area and operating theatre. We have many pieces of equipment that you would expect to find in a veterinary practice such as microscopes, anesthetic machines, operating tables and a large variety of surgical instruments. We also have a range of mannequins, from life-size Labradors to no so life-size ponies and with working farms and equestrian centres you will also have access to animals seen in large animal practices. As a veterinary nurse you will provide support to sick and injured animals who are receiving treatment in a veterinary practice and provide expert nursing care. You will help to educate owners on maintaining the health of their pets and carry out a range of medical treatments under veterinary supervision. Knowing that you have helped nurse animals back to full health is one of the most rewarding careers.

Animal Nursing Assistants Certificate

This one year course will give you the basic knowledge and skills needed to work as an Animal Nursing Assistant in a veterinary practice. During the course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice, including animal handling and care of in-patients such as feeding and exercising. It will also include client interaction and administrative duties.

BSc (Hons) Applied Animal Health Level 6

Level 6 • Full-time • Duchy College Stoke Climsland


This programme provides progression for graduates of the FdSc in Veterinary Nursing or Animal Health and Management, or equivalent programmes. It is a contemporary and relevant Level 6 qualification, run over one year for full time students or two years for part time students, based mainly at our Stoke Climsland campus. The programme incorporates a range of core and optional modules which ensure relevance for students who intend to work in any part of the animal health or veterinary industry. In addition, some option strands will be primarily aimed at Veterinary Nursing graduates, enabling them to develop specialist areas of interest and facilitate progression within practice. You will explore current issues in the industry and are encouraged to investigate areas of your interest. An Honours Project is completed as part of the year. The modules are closely linked to industry and students will be encouraged to support their learning with appropriate work experience. Graduates of this programme will be at the forefront of an ever changing world, where animal welfare is increasingly seen as paramount, and will be able to make a real and meaningful impact in this area.

Nursing CAVA Access To HE Diploma

Level 3 • Full-time • Duchy College Stoke Climsland


The Access to Nursing programme is designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress on to a range of health and social care related Higher Education degree programmes. Validated by CAVA, this is a recognised qualification for progression by universities. The course is challenging and you will in effect be studying the equivalent of 3 A levels in 9 months as opposed to 2 years. Therefore full attendance and absolute commitment is required to allow you to fully maximise your learning opportunities. If you are a proactive individual who is determined to realise their potential as a professional in the health care sector, then this pathway is for you. The course runs from September until the end of June/early July, 2 days per week. The course may also run 2 evenings and 1 day per week (subject to course numbers). This is a challenging course and it is expected that students will complete a minimum of 15 hours of independent study each week. Students may access college facilities on the days that they are not taught with some evening study available. Please also be advised that most universities require work experience to complement your UCAS application-therefore it is highly recommended that you are working within the health care sector in either a voluntary or paid capacity. Making use of our excellent practical facilities and links with Dartmoor Zoological Park and various charitable organisations across Cornwall and Devon, we can ensure that you have excellent access to hands-on experience and the benefit of up-to-date knowledge. Aspects of animal health and management are studied through a range of inter-related modules, giving you a solid grounding in this specialist area. Study tours in Year 1 and Year 2 will allow you to further your knowledge and experiences both nationally and internationally. You will have amazing opportunities to develop your knowledge of health, welfare and husbandry, and to work with a wide range of species within our Animal Management Centres at our Bicton College. You will have access to our Equine Yard. Links with Dartmoor Zoological Park have developed in the past few years and there are sound opportunities for you to broaden your experiences to a wider range of exotic species, including big cats, wolves, monkeys, capybara, tapirs and wallabies.We also work closely with a number of other animal organisations strengthening our links within the industry. Assessment will be via a range of written assignments and practical assessments, reports, in-class tests, formal examinations, presentations and group discussions. You will compile a portfolio of skills developed during practical sessions.

An introduction to Wildlife Conservation

This intensive one-day course will introduce you to wildlife and ecology by exploring the beautiful woodland within the Duchy College, Stoke Climsland grounds. In the morning you will discover and identify the local wildlife by carrying out a survey, lunchtime will take place (weather permitting) around a campfire , giving us the opportunity to discuss the mornings discoveries. In the afternoon you will be taught safe wood craft skills to assist with woodland management to support habitats. Delivered by experienced and friendly tutors, you will be inspired to further develop your knowledge and skills within wild conservation, whether learning for leisure or wishing to consider a career in the industry. As a veterinary nurse you will provide support to sick and injured animals who are receiving treatment in a veterinary practice and provide expert nursing care. You will help to educate owners on maintaining the health of their pets and carry out a range of medical treatments under veterinary supervision. Our Level 3 Animal Management Diploma offers you the choice of university study or employment on successful completion of your course. There are one and two year options available with this pathway and we will work with you to decide which is best for you. This is a 2 year course but you will need to pass the first year in order to progress onto the second. Caring for animals can be an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career. From working in kennels and catteries to pet shops, rescue centres or sanctuaries, there is a wide range of careers available on successful completion of your course. We offer three options for you to start your studies in the animal management industry depending on your GCSE results, our Level 2 and Level 1 courses are ideal should your GCSEs not be what you expected, with the option to progress to Level 2 or Level 3.
