This one year course will give you the basic knowledge and skills needed to work as an Animal Nursing Assistant in a veterinary practice.

During the course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice, including animal handling and care of in-patients such as feeding and exercising. It will also include client interaction and administrative duties.

  What You Will Learn

During this one-year course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice including animal handling and care, assisting with care and administrative duties in the veterinary environment. You will also undertake at least one day a week work experience in a veterinary practice.

  Entry Requirements

One GCSE at grade 5 in either English or maths and a further three GCSEs at grade 3 or above. A work experience placement of 1 - 2 days per week in a veterinary practice is also necessary.

  Work Experience

As part of your course you will be required to carry out Work Experience and/or an Industry Placement.

  Progression

Continue your studies with our Veterinary Nursing Diploma Level 3 or go into employment. This course is a helpful step into a career as a veterinary nurse.

BSc (Hons) Applied Animal Health Level 6

This programme provides progression for graduates of the FdSc in Veterinary Nursing or Animal Health and Management, or equivalent programmes. It is a contemporary and relevant Level 6 qualification, run over one year for full time students or two years for part time students, based mainly at our Stoke Climsland campus. The programme incorporates a range of core and optional modules which ensure relevance for students who intend to work in any part of the animal health or veterinary industry. In addition, some option strands will be primarily aimed at Veterinary Nursing graduates, enabling them to develop specialist areas of interest and facilitate progression within practice. You will explore current issues in the industry and are encouraged to investigate areas of your interest. An Honours Project is completed as part of the year. The modules are closely linked to industry and students will be encouraged to support their learning with appropriate work experience. Graduates of this programme will be at the forefront of an ever changing world, where animal welfare is increasingly seen as paramount, and will be able to make a real and meaningful impact in this area.

FdSc Animal Health & Management

Level 5 • Part-time • Duchy College Rosewarne


Gain a sound understanding of issues surrounding animal health, disease, behaviour, welfare and the management of animal collections. Making use of our excellent practical facilities and links with Dartmoor Zoological Park and various charitable organisations across Cornwall and Devon, we can ensure that you have excellent access to hands-on experience and the benefit of up-to-date knowledge. Aspects of animal health and management are studied through a range of inter-related modules, giving you a solid grounding in this specialist area. Study tours in Year 1 and Year 2 will allow you to further your knowledge and experiences both nationally and internationally. You will have amazing opportunities to develop your knowledge of health, welfare and husbandry, and to work with a wide range of species within our Animal Management Centres at our Bicton College. You will have access to our Equine Yard. Links with Dartmoor Zoological Park have developed in the past few years and there are sound opportunities for you to broaden your experiences to a wider range of exotic species, including big cats, wolves, monkeys, capybara, tapirs and wallabies.We also work closely with a number of other animal organisations strengthening our links within the industry. Assessment will be via a range of written assignments and practical assessments, reports, in-class tests, formal examinations, presentations and group discussions. You will compile a portfolio of skills developed during practical sessions.
