This one year course will give you the basic knowledge and skills needed to work as an Animal Nursing Assistant in a veterinary practice.

During the course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice, including animal handling and care of in-patients such as feeding and exercising. It will also include client interaction and administrative duties.

  What You Will Learn

During this one-year course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice including animal handling and care, assisting with care and administrative duties in the veterinary environment. You will also undertake at least one day a week work experience in a veterinary practice.

  Entry Requirements

One GCSE at grade 5 in either English or maths and a further three GCSEs at grade 3 or above. A work experience placement of 1 - 2 days per week in a veterinary practice is also necessary.

  Work Experience

As part of your course you will be required to carry out Work Experience and/or an Industry Placement.


Continue your studies with our Veterinary Nursing Diploma Level 3 or go into employment. This course is a helpful step into a career as a veterinary nurse.

This programme provides progression for graduates of the FdSc in Veterinary Nursing or Animal Health and Management, or equivalent programmes. It is a contemporary and relevant Level 6 qualification, run over one year for full time students or two years for part time students, based mainly at our Stoke Climsland campus. Business For The Environment & Land-based Sector Equine & Animal Science

Learners will be provided with an understanding of the principles of business within the environmental and land-based sector, and how these can be applied in practice. You will investigate the structure of the equine, and overall animal industry, and the principal organisations within it. You will explore regulations and legislation relevant to the industry, and develop the knowledge of common business operations and the simple administrative tasks. FdSc Veterinary Nursing

Level 5 • Full-time • Duchy College Rosewarne

This popular programme provides an ideal graduate-level route into veterinary nursing and successful completion allows registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN). The programme is run over three years and is strongly linked to the workplace: you undertake a veterinary nursing placement in practice for two to three days per week in the first and second years and full-time in the third year. Work-related learning is fully integrated, with 1800 hours of completed veterinary nursing work experience and assessments for the programme relating directly to the veterinary nursing industry. The modules offered provide a broad education in veterinary nursing of small animals – covering all of the requirements necessary to register as an RVN – as well as in additional areas such as animal behaviour, care and rehabilitation and animal nutrition. You will explore current issues in the industry and are encouraged to investigate areas of your interest. A research project is completed in the third year. The programme is delivered by a team of specialists including veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses, animal scientists and zoologists, all of whom have practical industry experience.
