This one year course will give you the basic knowledge and skills needed to work as an Animal Nursing Assistant in a veterinary practice.

During the course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice, including animal handling and care of in-patients such as feeding and exercising. It will also include client interaction and administrative duties.

  What You Will Learn

During this one-year course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice including animal handling and care, assisting with care and administrative duties in the veterinary environment. You will also undertake at least one day a week work experience in a veterinary practice.

  Entry Requirements

One GCSE at grade 5 in either English or maths and a further three GCSEs at grade 3 or above. A work experience placement of 1 - 2 days per week in a veterinary practice is also necessary.

  Work Experience

As part of your course you will be required to carry out Work Experience and/or an Industry Placement.

  Progression

Continue your studies with our Veterinary Nursing Diploma Level 3 or go into employment. This course is a helpful step into a career as a veterinary nurse.

Veterinary Nursing Diploma

Our veterinary nursing teaching areas are designed to simulate a veterinary practice. We have a radiography room, laboratory, kennel area and operating theatre. We have many pieces of equipment that you would expect to find in a veterinary practice such as microscopes, anesthetic machines, operating tables and a large variety of surgical instruments. We also have a range of mannequins, from life-size Labradors to no so life-size ponies and with working farms and equestrian centres you will also have access to animals seen in large animal practices. Our Level 3 Animal Management Diploma at Duchy College is an exciting stepping stone on your way to a rewarding career working with animals. This course can be studied as a one year Advanced Diploma in Animal Management Diploma or as a two year Extended Advanced Diploma in Animal Management, and we will work with you to decide which option will be the best choice for you. This Level 3 Zoo Animal Management Diploma is perfect if you would like a career caring for animals in a zoo-based setting. We work in partnership with Dartmoor Zoological Park to ensure you gain the practical, real-life experience that employers look for. There are one- and two-year options available with this pathway and we will work with you to decide which is best for you. Animal management departments on site at Duchy College Stoke Climsland and Bicton College will provide you with practical experience, you will also undertake one day a week work experience at Dartmoor Zoological Park, where you will work with the keepers and the education team. You will love getting hands-on experience at Dartmoor Zoological Park or our animal management centres on campus at Bicton and Duchy.
