This one year course will give you the basic knowledge and skills needed to work as an Animal Nursing Assistant in a veterinary practice.

During the course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice, including animal handling and care of in-patients such as feeding and exercising. It will also include client interaction and administrative duties.

  What You Will Learn

During this one-year course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice including animal handling and care, assisting with care and administrative duties in the veterinary environment. You will also undertake at least one day a week work experience in a veterinary practice.

  Entry Requirements

One GCSE at grade 5 in either English or maths and a further three GCSEs at grade 3 or above. A work experience placement of 1 - 2 days per week in a veterinary practice is also necessary.

  Work Experience

As part of your course you will be required to carry out Work Experience and/or an Industry Placement.

  Progression

Continue your studies with our Veterinary Nursing Diploma Level 3 or go into employment. This course is a helpful step into a career as a veterinary nurse.

Making use of our excellent practical facilities and links with Dartmoor Zoological Park and various charitable organisations across Cornwall and Devon, we can ensure that you have excellent access to hands-on experience and the benefit of up-to-date knowledge. Aspects of animal health and management are studied through a range of inter-related modules, giving you a solid grounding in this specialist area. You will compile a portfolio of skills developed during practical sessions.

Animal Management Diploma

Our Level 3 Animal Management Diploma at Duchy College is an exciting stepping stone on your way to a rewarding career working with animals. This course can be studied as a one year Advanced Diploma in Animal Management Diploma or as a two year Extended Advanced Diploma in Animal Management, and we will work with you to decide which option will be the best choice for you. Our state of the art animal management centres at Duchy College Rosewarne and Duchy College Stoke Climsland provide dedicated access to a huge range of animal species such as small mammals, exotics, birds, aquatics, and farm animals. Learners will also have the opportunity to visit and access real industry environments including Dartmoor Zoological Park. Caring for animals can be an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career; from working in kennels and catteries to wildlife rescue, there are a wide range of careers available upon successful completion of the course.
