If you want to work in the livestock industry, then this qualification will help you to gain knowledge of this area. This course will prepare you to demonstrate competence in handling, health and assessing stock.

You will learn the basic requirements for managing stock, why considering their welfare is important and the Welfare Code requirements for a given class of livestock relating to housing and health.

You will also learn about the procedures to be followed in the event of an emergency, the checks which should be made on livestock and the measures that can be taken to prevent disease entering a holding/farm.

Please note: Funding for this course may be available depending on eligibility.

The assessment for this course is two-fold, the first part is a computer based test of your knowledge, the second is conducted via a practical assessment and one to one questioning.

You will need to ensure that you have the correct personal protection equipment to be worn at all times during practical work.

This course is open to everyone however, if you are 19 years old or over, you may be eligible for funding for this course. Please enquire for more details about your eligibility.

Prospective beekeepers are strongly advised to seek as much information as possible about bees and work alongside another beekeeper before purchasing any hives. To start you on the right track we are offering a course for beginners. Apiculture has a voluntary Code of Conduct. The code’s objectives are to maintain good relations among all beekeepers and stakeholders, be considerate of public safety, and through good beekeeping practice, ensure the sustainability of bees and their environment. This agriculture programme widens your knowledge of the agricultural industry, with a view to managing agricultural operations after graduation. The programme provides a thorough understanding of modern farming production systems and an in-depth knowledge of the underlying scientific and technological principles. The FdSc Agriculture is delivered using a combination of approaches to enable the acquisition of required academic knowledge. Practical farm management is also integral and the programme benefits from industry-wide support. This course is available with a Science Gateway. Which is ideal for those who would like to study any of the science-based Foundation Degrees (FdSc) we offer, but don’t have the right qualifications or grades to do so.

Agriculture Diploma

Level 3 • Full-time • Duchy College Stoke Climsland


Duchy College is the region’s largest land-based education and training provider, with both campuses located in the heart of the countryside, surrounded by rolling hills and working farm land. This Level 3 Agriculture course is perfect for you if you want to develop your technical knowledge and practical skills in order to gain a better understanding of the management of different agricultural enterprises, or as an alternative to A-levels to gain university entry. You can expect to be in college three to four days a week and to gain a wide variety of experience from practical work on the College farm and in association with our industry partners, which include Rothamstead Research, who provide unique research capabilities for the UK. We are also the only agricultural college in the country where students take an active role in first cut silage making. Our Duchy Stoke Climsland campus is home to Future Farm, a £10 million scheme including a state-of-the-art dairy unit, the campus occupies a 367-hectare estate with dairy, beef, sheep, arable and forage crops, plus a range of dry and wet habitats typical of the area. We also have an impressive portfolio of up-to-date farm machinery.
