Learners will be provided with an understanding of the principles of business within the environmental and land-based sector, and how these can be applied in practice.
You will investigate the structure of the equine, and overall animal industry, and the principal organisations within it. You will explore regulations and legislation relevant to the industry, and develop the knowledge of common business operations and the simple administrative tasks.

This course is for adults aged 19+.

  What You Will Learn

There are four learning outcomes:

To know an industry within the environmental and land-based sector
To know the relevant legislation and codes of practice within the environmental and land-based sector
To know common business operations
To know how to carry-out simple administrative tasks

There will be one assignment unit, that you will be supported to complete. The unit can be achieved at a pass, merit or distinction.

Gain a sound understanding of issues surrounding animal health, disease, behaviour, welfare and the management of animal collections. Making use of our excellent practical facilities and links with Dartmoor Zoological Park and various charitable organisations across Cornwall and Devon, we can ensure that you have excellent access to hands-on experience and the benefit of up-to-date knowledge. Aspects of animal health and management are studied through a range of inter-related modules, giving you a solid grounding in this specialist area. Study tours in Year 1 and Year 2 will allow you to further your knowledge and experiences both nationally and internationally. You will have amazing opportunities to develop your knowledge of health, welfare and husbandry, and to work with a wide range of species within our Animal Management Centres at our Bicton College. You will have access to our Equine Yard. Links with Dartmoor Zoological Park have developed in the past few years and there are sound opportunities for you to broaden your experiences to a wider range of exotic species, including big cats, wolves, monkeys, capybara, tapirs and wallabies.We also work closely with a number of other animal organisations strengthening our links within the industry. This course is also available with Science Gateway, perfect for you if you would like to study any of the science-based Foundation Degrees (FdSc) we offer, but don’t have the right qualifications or grades to do so.

Animal Care Certificate

Level 2 • Full-time • Duchy College Stoke Climsland


This Level 2 Animal Care course is available both Duchy college campuses, which are each home to a large variety of animals. The Level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care is about preparing you for any career with animals. Whether going into further study, wanting to become a pet shop assistant, a zoo keeper or work in rescue centres, this course sets you up for a career in the animal industry. Caring for animals can be an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career. From working in kennels and catteries to pet shops, rescue centres or sanctuaries, there is a wide range of careers available on successful completion of your course. With access to animal collections on campus you will gain the practical training you need to pursue a career in this exciting industry. This is a one year course than runs from September to July. It is run over 4 days at college and 1 day at a work experience placement to gain at all important experience. This course uses a balance of theory and practice to help you develop the skills and knowhow to confidently work with animals’ great and small. You will cover a broad range of topics that cater for all animals from small to large mammals, to birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians. You will learn how to maintain animal health and welfare, how to care for feeding and accommodation routines. You will explore animal behaviour and correct handling techniques, along with ensuring Health & Safety is paramount in the Animal and Land based industries. You will learn about how to care for exotics animals and how animals’ biological systems work. You will also get to choose between either Introduction to Caring for Horses or Livestock. You will trial both units before deciding which you would like to develop further. You will study a combination of theory and practical work, and can expect to spend time both at college and in a work experience placement of your choice. You will also have the opportunity to go on field trips to local zoos, wildlife parks and animal sanctuaries. You will need to purchase PPE to wear during your practical sessions. More information about what PPE will be required will be provided upon application.

Work-based Animal Care Award

The City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Work-based Animal Care is a programme of work-based training and assessment, leading to a nationally-recognised qualification. It aims to meet the needs of learners who work, or want to work, in the animal care sector. It allow learners to learn, develop, and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the animal care sector.
