If you can’t get enough of sport and/or fitness and have your sights set on becoming a sports coach, PE teacher or fitness instructor, then this is the course for you. Then this will be on your first step in to a career in the sport, health and fitness industry!

The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about both practical and theoretical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time in our on-campus sports hall, a fully equipped gym and 3G pitch.

You’ll be looking at everything: strength & conditioning techniques, skills and the beginnings of tactical awareness along with teamwork and leadership. In addition, you will be carrying out your very own personal fitness plan as you progress through the course. In essence, you’ll be developing all of the essential skills you need to start your journey towards a career in sport, health and fitness.

Cornwall College has a selection of college sports teams, which regularly train and compete at a participatory and competitive level, student, are encouraged to get involved with these to supplement your studies. Whatever your sport may be there is an opportunity to work with our experienced team to develop your skills and fitness to help you reach the next level.

In addition Duchy College Stoke has an amazing partnership in place with Plymouth Argyle FC. Students on our sports programmes can opt in to study a football specific programme with high quality training delivered by Argyle staff twice a week and fixtures taking place most Wednesday afternoons, all of which go towards the evidence needed to complete your course, playing football actually is your college course.

We have excellent links with local employers and sports clubs, providing amazing work experience and volunteering opportunities. Many of our students have gone on to employment further afield or abroad.

As a Level 2 course, this diploma is all about introducing you to everything from the theory behind how the body works, to the practical steps needed to plan and coach your very own sport/fitness session. Our highly-skilled and motivated staff have a wealth of knowledge and experience in sport, health and fitness. They are there to give you the very best start to your career.

  What You Will Learn

This one-year introduction will provide the foundation knowledge of anatomy and physiology, you will learn about the principles of training and how to perform practically to achieve sporting excellence.

By gaining an introduction to sports coaching, you will be prepared for the more specialised tactical awareness, sporting skills, awareness of healthy exercise and nutrition moving onto further qualifications.

  Entry Requirements

A minimum of three GCSEs at grade D (3) (to include English and PE/maths desirable) or you will have successfully completed a relevant Level 1 programme including English Functional Skills Level 1.

  Work Experience

The learning is supplemented with engagement with industry specialists as you will complete a mandatory work experience as part of your level 2 programme.

  Assessment

You will be assessed through written assignments, professional discussions, group work, practical assessments and presentations.

  Progression

Once you’ve finished the Level 2 course, you’ll have a real understanding of the foundations to sports coaching including health and fitness; and be ready to move on to the more advanced Level 3 courses. Alternatively you could look to enter the industry as a leisure assistant or assistant coach.

This is an exciting new diploma that is currently only being offered at two colleges in England (including Duchy College, Stoke Climsland). It offers a range of subject areas including Physiology, Psychology, Bio-mechanics, Exercise and Performance etc. This course has been developed with the assistance of Sussex University and The University of St. Mark and St. John (Marjon) and offers a wide range of opportunities for people wanting to progress on to university degrees in Sports, Psychology, Coaching, Fitness etc. This is an academic diploma so most of the study will be classroom based however opportunities will be made available to get involved in practical work using our extensive facilities and those at our partner university. Access courses are designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress on to Higher Education. There is a very high level of academic and personal support throughout the course, which can help if you need to combine study with part-time employment and family commitments. Please Note: This course is only available to applicants who are 19+ This course would suit people needing to progress on to higher educations in the following areas; Sports Coaching, Sports Psychology, Sports Physiotherapy, Sports Science, Sport Performance, Physiology, etc. Some study to take place with our Higher Education partners. Most people would need to study at least 20 hours per week on top of the contact time.

The aim of this 3 year programme is to provide students with the key principles and concepts of golf management, both internationally and nationally. Graduates will be able to meet the expectations of employers as competent golf managers who can apply scientific and management principles to their practice whilst being able to predict the outcomes of theory actions and generate policy and management initiatives. Students will learn the necessary skills and qualifications which will allow them to gain purposeful employment within the golf industry, whilst allowing them to continue their practical golf development and further their playing career. There are additional programme costs of £9250.00 (excluding tuition fee of £9250.00 per annum) to cover the costs of all accommodation, golf tuition, range and gym facilities.
