Our outdoor leadership syllabus covers
• Experience in a wide range of outdoor activities

In addition to understanding the essentials in this industry you will investigate;

• Leadership styles to the most out of your clients.

When you’re not in the classroom, our highly experienced instructors will have you out and about for a whole day of practical activity one day a week, throughout the academic calendar.

Throughout the course we will also invite you to participate in range of adventurous challenges. A few on your must-do list should be;

• Snowdonia National Park experience week
• Navigation expeditions on Dartmoor
• Canoeing expeditions on the Fal River
• Rock Climbing and abseiling experiences

About the campus
As a student you will have access to our on-site gym and sports hall. You will also benefit from being situated in one of the best placed college campuses for outdoor activities anywhere in the UK.

  What You Will Learn

This one or two-year programme will give you an essential understanding of the requirements needed for working in the outdoor industry, giving you the chance to develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the outdoors.

You’ll experience a mix of classroom and outdoor sessions, often working with groups from across the college and local schools to give you a real experience of instructing in the outdoors.

  Entry Requirements

You will need 4 GSCEs at Grade , including English and Maths to access the Level 3.

  Work Experience

The outdoor industry in the South West is on the rise, there are plenty of opportunities for you to put your new found skills to the test during your work experience placement at one of the many local outdoor centres that we work closely with.

As part of your second year you will complete up to 315 hours in the industry as part of your industry placement, our links with local centres means this can be spent working alongside some of the best instructors operating in Cornwall and could even lead to employment in the summer season straight out of college.

  Assessment

You will be assessed through workbooks, presentations and practical assignments throughout the year.

  Progression

Once you’ve finished the Level 3 course, you’ll have a comprehensive understanding of the outdoor industry and will be ready to get out there into the industry doing what you love, or you may choose to further your studies and apply to university to study courses in Outdoor Adventure Education or another Sports related area.

As business becomes increasingly global, the need for effective management within organisations becomes paramount and the opportunities for graduates expands. You will study the management of international business, and how the key theoretical approaches can be used in practice. You will get the opportunity to develop and apply business and management skills both within and outside of the formal programme. Business will not be your only interest, you will have a passion for the game of golf and want to develop your game further. Our BA (Hons) International Business Management programme is sympathetically timetabled so that you can fully engage with our golf performance development programme, including competing in professional events, and our 10-12 weeks training in Southern Europe. The programme is intensive, with the primary delivery taking place over 22 weeks from September to April. This intensive delivery model, with activity seven days a week, ensures that the academic and golf performance development delivery is completed ahead of Easter when the UK golf season starts. During the summer, students work either in positions within industry or practising, planning and managing their golf development. The BA (Hons) International Business Management (with Professional Golf) aims to: Produce students who are knowledgeable, analytical, forward thinking and highly employable in an international business environment. Allow students to develop their critical thinking and understanding of the factors and issues involved in managing international businesses. Develop key transferable skills and autonomy of learning. Ensure currency of delivery throughout the programme. Provide opportunity for students to practice and develop business and management skills within and outside of the formal programme. Extended Diploma in Sport (Sports Coaching)

The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about both practical and theoretical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time outside the classroom doing practical sport and fitness in our on-campus sports hall, fully equipped gym and grass pitches. There are no exams at all; the course is a combination of practical and portfolio-based assessments. At Duchy Stoke we have two pathways within the Level 3 qualification: football or fitness. If you are interested in the football pathway; Duchy College Stoke has an amazing partnership in place with Plymouth Argyle FC. Students have the opportunity to enrol on a post 16 football development programme with high quality training delivered by Argyle staff twice a week and fixtures taking place most Wednesday afternoons, all of which go towards the evidence needed to complete your course, playing football actually is your college course. The Plymouth Argyle staff are on site for each day of the pathway, using their specialist industry expertise to support coach development and to improve individual player performance. If you are interested in the fitness pathway: Duchy College Stoke have developed a new partnership with the state-of-the-art gym provision at The Zone in nearby Callington. You will travel to The Zone for some of your practical sessions where they have a combination of fitness equipment covering all aspects of fitness. In addition to the Duchy team having fitness industry experience and qualifications, the team at the Zone will be able to add their insight as you work on both your own physical fitness and learn how to coach in the fitness setting.
