Our Level 1 Practical Horse Skills for Adult Learners (19+) course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to turn your passion into a career.

You will:

• Develop your practical horse care skills

• Learn how to work safely, effectively and efficiently in the equine workplace

• Gain confidence in applying for roles within the industry

  What You Will Learn

The course provides the students with an insight on how to care for horses: this will include basic horse-care skills such as grooming, feeding and rugging, and day-to-day care of the horse.

Equine First Aid

No Qualification • Part-time • Duchy College Stoke Climsland

This course is suitable for horse owners wishing to learn about applying first aid to their horse. Students will learn how to assess basic health, and recognise when the horse is in poor-health: covering signs and symptoms, TPR (temperature, pulse and respiration), wounds, common ailments, lumps and bumps, and what to have in your vet kit. If you are unsure how to recognise the signs of illness or what to do while awaiting a vet, then this course is suitable for you. Please ensure that you come wearing suitable clothing and yard footwear. Please also bring a riding hat and gloves for handling horses. This course is not suitable for complete novices- you must have some experience of handling horses to participate. Please note: This course is for adults aged 19+ only and will run from 09:00-16:00.

Technical Certificate in Horse Care

Level 2 • Full-time • Duchy College Stoke Climsland

If you can’t get enough of horses and have your sights set on working with them, then this is the course for you and can be your first step into a career working in the equine industry. The course is made up of a mixture of academic lessons and practical lessons, with lots of opportunities to work around the horses and on the yard. You’ll be working on a range of different topics and units on this course including: Horse health, the equine industry, feeding and watering, grassland management, anatomy and physiology, tack and equipment and environmental and land-based business studies. Basically, you will be studying all aspects of equestrianism to build and develop you theoretical knowledge and working on improving your practical skills. We are very lucky to have 2 indoor schools and 1 outdoor school, stabling for 55 horses, that are all rubber matted and have automatic water drinkers. We have a 5 horse horse-walker, 2 hot wash bays and solariums, and heated tack rooms. We have 30 acres of grazing that is split into smaller paddocks, a cross country schooling area and lots of beautiful hacking available. On evenings and weekends we run competitions or hire our facilities to a range of different awarding bodies, including British Dressage, British Showjumping, The Riding for the Disabled Association and the British Horse Driving Trials Association. So, if you have a passion for horses and want a career working with them, this is the best place to start. As a Level 2 qualification, this Technical Certificate is all about introducing you to the equine industry and developing your essential skills. You’ll be learning from experienced and well qualified staff, who are there to give you the very best start to your career. There are 2 options on the course, riding or non-riding.
