This course provides an introduction to a range of essential horticultural skills. It provides an excellent foundation for further study within horticulture.

  What You Will Learn

Preparing soil for sowing and planting

Select and use the correct tools and equipment for preparing soil
Clear a site of unwanted debris
Load, transport and spread bulky organic matter
Cultivate soil by hand
Know how to dispose of waste appropriately
Soil testing

Understand the reasons for soil testing
Collect and prepare soil samples for testing
Identify the textural class of soils
Determine the pH of soils
Assist with the propagation of plants from seed

Assist with preparing to propagate plants from seed
Sow seed under supervision
Work safely
Assist with the vegetative propagation of plants

Assist with collecting, preparing and establishing propagation material for plants and grow in the right environment

  Entry Requirements

You won't need any formal qualifications to enrol, but you must be enthusiastic about plants.

  Assessment

Each module is assessed by a range of practical activities timetabled throughout the qualification.

  Progression

Students who have completed this course go onto RHS course at Level 2, completion of the RHS Diploma, Garden Design or become self-employed gardeners and work for other organisations in a gardening role, plus working in plant nurseries and garden centres.

Plants play an incredibly important role in all our lives by providing us with oxygen and food sources. As a horticulturalist you will need to use your scientific knowledge of plants and soil to grow a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, shrubs, flowers and grass. Our courses will give you all the in-depth knowledge you need to start your career, with the option of continuing on to university study with one of our degrees at the iconic Eden Project. As a modern horticulturalist you’ll need a range of skills including; scientific knowledge of plants, soil, pest and diseases and a wide variety of practical skills such as planting, pruning and hard landscaping. This level 3 course is for learners who are interested in developing the specific technical and professional skills and knowledge that will lead to meaningful employment in the horticulture industry. It equips you with the core skills and knowledge to enter employment in the horticultural industry. You would take this qualification if you really enjoy the practical aspects of working in a horticultural setting. Employment opportunities that may arise from doing this qualification are very much ‘operative’ roles i.e. hands-on.

Planning a Summer border and summer containers

On this course we will look at planning a summer border, the use of perennial planting and annual plants. You will sow a tray seed of seeds to take home to start your summer displays. The day will include visits to the Rosewarne Rose Garden and the Winter garden. This course will run from 10am - 4pm.
