The Rider Biomechanics course will introduce some key principles of biomechanical analysis and their application to rider performance, this can help riders to identify areas that could aid their riding and improve performance. A part of the course involve use of our dressage simulator and its use in rider biomechanic analysis.

  What You Will Learn

Attendees will be provided with an overview of rider biomechanics and analysis utilising a range of subjective and objective analysis methods. They will be introduced to concepts such as kinetics and kinematics and their interrelationship and role in equestrianism, in particular the horse:rider dyad.

Dependent on numbers and ability they will be offered the opportunity to ride the dressage simulator. However this is not a requirement for attendance and is not guaranteed for all attendees (as we may not have time to do everyone).

Please note: This course is for adults 19+.

Technical Certificate in Horse Care

If you can’t get enough of horses and have your sights set on working with them, then this is the course for you and can be your first step into a career working in the equine industry. The course is made up of a mixture of academic lessons and practical lessons, with lots of opportunities to work around the horses and on the yard. You’ll be working on a range of different topics and units on this course including: Horse health, the equine industry, feeding and watering, grassland management, anatomy and physiology, tack and equipment and environmental and land-based business studies. Basically, you will be studying all aspects of equestrianism to build and develop you theoretical knowledge and working on improving your practical skills. We are very lucky to have 2 indoor schools and 1 outdoor school, stabling for 55 horses, that are all rubber matted and have automatic water drinkers. We have a 5 horse horse-walker, 2 hot wash bays and solariums, and heated tack rooms. We have 30 acres of grazing that is split into smaller paddocks, a cross country schooling area and lots of beautiful hacking available. On evenings and weekends we run competitions or hire our facilities to a range of different awarding bodies, including British Dressage, British Showjumping, The Riding for the Disabled Association and the British Horse Driving Trials Association. So, if you have a passion for horses and want a career working with them, this is the best place to start. As a Level 2 qualification, this Technical Certificate is all about introducing you to the equine industry and developing your essential skills. You’ll be learning from experienced and well qualified staff, who are there to give you the very best start to your career. There are 2 options on the course, riding or non-riding.

Lunging and long-reining

Lunging and long-reining are common techniques used in training young horses but can also be used as a form of exercise in the more established horse. During this course, you will learn the reasons why we lunge and long-rein our horses, how we do so effectively, health and safety and what can go wrong. Please come along to this course with suitable clothing and footwear for working with horses, you will also need a hat and gloves to participate. Please note: this course is for applicants aged 19+ only This course runs from - 09:00-16:00

Equine Clipping and Trimming

Entry Level • Full-time • Duchy College Stoke Climsland


This course will show students how to clip and trim their horses safely or for those who wish to develop their skills further. Clipping is used for a number of reasons and there are a variety of clips to suit. In the winter horses in work are often clipped to reduce the issues associated with sweaty thick coats and in the summer months, some show horses may be clipped for aesthetic purposes. Clipping well takes practice and it is important to know the basics before you try to clip your horse.
