Zoo Animal Care Technical Certificate

Duchy College Stoke Climsland LEVEL: 2 Animal Management & Veterinary Nursing

This course is run in conjunction with Dartmoor Zoological Park, where you will learn about the specialist care that zoo animals need. Throughout the course you will learn by a combination of practical and theory work and you will also have the opportunity to gain great industry experience in the animal industry.

Ideal if:

You are keen to learn about animals, particularly those kept in a zoo environment.

You’ll need:

One GCSE at grade C or 4 in English or maths and three additional GCSEs at grade D or 3 or above.

You’ll learn:

About animal health and welfare, animal housing and feeding, care of exotic animals, caring for zoo animals, animal behaviour and handling and working in industry.


To develop your employability skills by undertaking a one day per week work placement in an animal-based organisation of your choice.

To attend college 4 days per week plus 1 day work experience.

You’ll love:

Spending time at Dartmoor Zoological Park, working with exotic animals, learning about the specialist care they require.

Jo Challacombe Technician - Animal Management

Jo manages the care of a wide range of animals at Duchy College's Stoke Climsland animal care unit and supports students on further and higher education programmes, to give them the best hands-on learning experience. Jo originally trained in equitation science before broadening her experience into understanding the needs and behaviours of a range of animals from rats and snakes to centipedes and rabbits!
