This course gives you the skills and knowledge required to qualify and become a Forest School Assistant.

Ideal if:

You wish to assist a qualified Level 3 Forest School Leader in running Forest School programmes. It is suitable for teaching assistants, nursery/pre-school practitioners, youth workers, play workers and outdoor adventure play practitioners and is an ideal start for practitioners in building confidence in Forest School.

You’ll need:

Applicants should hold a relevant qualification equivalent to a Level 1 or some experience of working with children/young people, have a current DBS disclosure and be aged 18 and over.

You’ll learn:

You will complete two units linked to learning outcomes:

  • Skills for the Forest School Programme Assistant. This unit will introduce you to sustainable woodland management in the context of learning activities, risk management as well as training in use of fire and tools with client groups.
  • Supporting Learning and Development at a Forest School programme. This unit explores the topics of holistic development and learning through play, promoting positive behaviour and also will involve you assisting with planning and delivery of three sessions in a Forest School Programme.

You will have 5 full contact days at college and a year to complete the two units based on learning outcomes practical evidence.


Delivery of the course to consist of both indoor and outdoor activities, practical and theory. Assessment is by observation and a portfolio of evidence.
