Apprenticeships allow you to work while gaining a nationally recognised qualification at the same time, so why not combine your love of horses with earning money. You are employed in the horse care industry and would like to gain a nationally recognised qualification.
four GCSEs at grade 3, your application will also include a numeracy and literacy test, plus an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice.
Over the course of 12 to 18 months you will spend one day every two weeks during term time in college, where you will study a range of subjects including riding and exercising, feeding and welfare, maintaining effective working relationships, health and safety with horses and employer rights and responsibilities. The rest of the week will be spent at your workplace. You’ll also work towards a Level 2 functional skills qualification in English and maths.
We have some great links with the equine world and fantastic facilities at the equestrian centres at each of our college sites, giving you amazing opportunities to explore the range of careers available and further develop your equine-related skills throughout your apprenticeship training. You will also have the opportunity to join the breeding or coaching pathway.
Our fantastic facilities. At our Duchy College Stoke Climsland campus we have two indoor arenas, a large outdoor arena, a weighbridge, horse walker, wash down and solarium facilities, as well as industry standard equipment and technology.
In Devon our Bicton College campus is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and includes an indoor and outdoor arena, two industry standard teaching rooms, judging areas, two full sets of show jumps, weighbridge, solarium and walker. There are also two separate yards.
Work in the industry using your practical skills or progress on to our Horse Care Apprenticeship Level 3, or further education opportunities.
Sam Harding Instructor and Technician - EquineSam works as an equine technician and has an integral role in the day-to-day organising and management of the yard. Sam currently holds her BHSII and is working towards her BHSI. Enjoying teaching and training horses and riders, both at the College and in the wider equine population, ensures Sam is current and contemporary in her approach to the education of both. Sam completed some of her training at Talland School of Equitation and returned to Devon and Cornwall to share the knowledge gained and train for future exams.
