This one year Level 2 Horse Care course is for anyone wishing to start a career within the equine industry.  This course gives an insight into some of the diverse areas of employment available in the equine sector developing your skills to support your career goals.

We offer three options for you to start your studies in equine management depending on your GCSE results. This Level 2 course (or our Level 1 Horse Care) are ideal should your GCSE results not be what you expected, with the option to progress onto Level 3.

Through City & Guilds we offer two pathways, a riding and a non-riding option to support you achieving this qualification.

Ideal if:

You wish to pursue a career within the equine industry.

You’ll need:

Four GCSEs at grade 3 including English and maths, as well as an appropriate level of riding ability.

This qualification is suitable if you are 16 years old, or over.


Riding pathway

You must be able to demonstrate walk, trot and canter on a quiet schooled horse. The College operates a 13 stone (82.5 kg) weight limit for the riding pathway to uphold the welfare of its working horses.

Non-riding pathway

You need to demonstrate skills with horses/ponies including:

  • Catching a horse/pony in the stable and tying up correctly
  • Leading safely in walk and trot
  • Tacking up with a snaffle bridle and GP saddle
  • Grooming with an awareness of how to safely move around a horse in the stable
  • Mucking out

You’ll learn:

On the course you will gain an understanding and knowledge within equine topics allowing you to progress in education or to support employment opportunities. Working with horses is extremely rewarding but it can require long hours and dedication to succeed, this course will assist with these employability skills that are transferable into working in the equine industry.

All subjects are facilitated by tutors who are highly qualified subject specialists to ensure our learners enjoy as they learn on this developmental programme.

You will study:

  • Health and safety for the land-based industries
  • Equine health and welfare
  • Working in the equine industry
  • Horse tack and equipment
  • Undertake routine stable duties
  • The principles of feeding and watering horses
  • Horse handling and grooming
  • Introduction to lunging horses

Riding pathway:

  • Riding on the flat
  • Introduction to jumping

Non-riding pathway:

  • Equine anatomy and physiology
  • Environmental and land-based business


Both pathways offer the opportunity to ride the College horses depending on riding ability but only riding pathway students will be assessed on their riding, receive regular ridden training and be encouraged to work towards British Horse Society qualifications. The non-riding option students have equal access to the horses but for other purposes due to option choices.

Extra activities to support your learning are:

  • Taking part in student competitions
  • Guest speakers
  • Work experience in the equine industry
  • Meaningful engagement and involvement with employers
  • Study Tour - Please note that your study tour incurs an overnight stay and an extra cost as do some trips.

You are assessed through a combination of assignments, practical assessments and written exams.

You are required to work regularly in the College equestrian centre to develop your skills to support successful achievement of the qualification.

Our trips to events such as Badminton Horse Trials, British Eventing Competitions, racing yards and equine retail.

You’ll go on to:

The Level 3 Diploma in Equine Management at Duchy College, Level 2 or Level 3 Apprenticeship or  employment possibilities in the equine sector (dependant on age).

Bradley started his studies at Duchy College on the Level 3 course and continued through to the MSc. While studying he also gained extra qualifications including BHS AI, BHS Stage 4 Riding Horses on the Flat and Lunge, and BHS Professional Accredited Coach.
