Have you ever wondered how your food gets from farm to fork? Or from the sea to the plate? Our specialist range of food production apprenticeships will teach you all the in-depth knowledge you need to start your career as a butcher, baker, brewer, fishmonger, dairy specialist or food manufacturing expert.

An apprenticeship will allow you to earn money while you are studying.

A food manufacturing apprenticeship is the ideal way to earn money whilst gaining a nationally recognised qualification. The provision is open to anyone aged 16+ years provided that you meet current eligibility. You must be fully employed in your chosen career path and hold a genuine interest in your area of work, demonstrating enthusiasm and a strong determination to succeed.

Entry Requirements:

GCSE English and maths at grade 3, as well as an employer willing to hire you as an apprentice.

What You Will Learn:

Your apprenticeship will take between one and two years to complete and you will study certain modules no matter which apprenticeship you choose: health and safety, food safety, emergency first aid, employer rights and responsibilities.

Choose from one of the following pathways:


Ideal for those wanting to work in a craft, instore or plant bakery business. You will need to have a real interest in bakery and food production, be able to follow recipes and work in a fast-paced environment.


Ideal if you would like to develop intermediate occupational skills and knowledge in a wide range of brewing skills including weighing and mixing ingredients, keeping records, monitoring temperature and quality of the beer, sterilising equipment and much more.


The meat and poultry products sector accounts for 23.6% of expenditure on food. This apprenticeship is designed primarily for learners in the meat and poultry industry who wish to develop intermediate skills and knowledge. You will study livestock handling and grading, abattoir and cutting plant.


With more than 96% of people regularly consuming dairy products, the dairy industry plays a key role in the health of the nation. This apprenticeship is ideal if you would like to work in both automated and craft production companies. You will develop specific dairy skills and specialist dairy subject knowledge.

Fish and Shellsh

This apprenticeship is ideal if you would like to work in the fish and shellfish processing and supply industry, fish wholesalers, fish preparation or fish frying sector.

Food Industry Skills

The food industry is worth £96.1 billion to the UK economy making it a fantastic place to build an exciting and diverse career. This apprenticeship is ideal if you would like to work in a food manufacturing or supply chain business and would like a job as an operative in food processing, food packaging and distribution, food service and sales, or food quality assurance.


A wide range of work-based activities to help you understand the systems essential for good practice, safe preparation and processing in line with the quality standards demanded by industry and today's customers.

Roger has an agricultural background with over 25 years of experience working on and managing different farms throughout the UK. Ten years ago he joined the agricultural department at Duchy College and now heads up the agricultural and food related apprenticeship programmes delivered through the South West region.
