You won't need any formal qualifications to enrol, but you must be enthusiastic about plants.

You’ll learn:

Mandatory units

Complete all of the following:

  • Soil testing
  • Sowing seeds and vegetative propagation techniques
  • Practical skills in ground preparation for seeding and planting
  • Practical skills in establishing seeds and plants in soil
  • Care and pruning of plants
  • Identification of a range of common garden plants, weeds, pests, diseases and disorders and beneficial organisms

Optional units

As chosen by the specific centre:

  • Sustainable garden practice at Rosewarne


To complete all of the practical tests and identification tests to achieve the level 2 certificate. This will involve some research and an element of homework.

You’ll go on to:

Students who have completed this course go onto RHS Level 2 Theory Certificates and RHS Level 3 Practical Certificate.

Some students choose to go into employment as self employed gardeners and work for other organisations in a gardening role. This could include working in garden centres and plant nurseries.

This course runs one day a week from September to June. You will need to have steel toe capped boots, a pair of gloves, secateurs and working clothes.
