This unique practical, higher education Foundation Degree programme has been designed for anyone wishing to develop the Leadership/Management, the specialised skills and knowledge which would enable them to prepare for entry and future careers in the Public and Emergency Services, the civil Police Service, the Military Police, the Criminal Justice System or private/commercial security services. The programme provides students with academic understanding and practical experience of the nature of working together within the wider public service with in-depth analysis of the conflicts of a modern day society. Graduating students are offered guaranteed entry to the University of Plymouth one year ‘top-up’ BSc (Hons) Emergency Services (Interoperability).

The College of Policing instigated and have published a review of national police leadership and look to the future.

“……Implementing the recommendations inevitably comes with a cost, but we accept that investment is crucial if we are to improve the way that our leaders are developed. It is the workforce in policing who have delivered the changes of recent years. Only by investing in and valuing the people who work in policing will we succeed in overcoming the tough challenges in the next few years. Delivery of all the recommendations may take time but, in the long term, it is essential that policing makes this investment. The College will work collaboratively across policing to implement these recommendations and shape the future direction of police leadership………” (Chief Constable Alex Marshall, College of Policing 2016).

The programme content will look at the current challenges faced by the emergency services and sector in moving towards a more cohesive and interoperable methods of working in an uncertain world. These include the issues around modern day terrorism, the requirements for organisational change within the emergency sector to meet these demands and to ensure greater effectiveness in joint working. People and workforce management issues will also be included in the course content where relevant models and theories will be examined and appraised.

  • Leadership, Management and Communication
  • Ethics and Psychology within the Emergency Services
  • Managing the Media and Public Perceptions Managing Emergency Incidents
  • Emergency Services Interoperability

On completion of the course potential careers include: Any public sector area ranging from Ambulance, Police and Fire Service, County Councils, Health/nursing, civil contingency/emergency planning offices, Local Resilience Forums, Armed Forces, private consultancy work, voluntary Search and Rescue sector, RNLI, Coastguard , Mountain Rescue, work within the utility companies in terms of risk management and collaboration.

The application process for full-time and part-time degree level courses with The Cornwall College Group starting in September 2017 is still open and we are taking applications.  Full-time applicants should apply via UCAS and part-time applicants directly via the College website.

Entry Requirements

48 UCAS points from AS and A-Levels (at least 32 points must be at A2-level) or relevant level 3 qualification, ie BTEC National Diploma / BTEC Extended Diploma - PPP Grades required. Access to HE Diplomas - 45 credits at level 3. Plus GCSEs at grade C or above in English language and mathematics: alternatives at Level 2 may be considered. Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply.
