College students from Penryn have been getting onboard with their STEAM (Science, Technology, English, Arts and Maths) by linking with local colleges and businesses.
The idea is to ensure their students have the opportunities and skills required to access careers in the STEAM industries and one of the projects involved making surfboards with Falmouth Marine School.
The students designed and shaped their boards at school then spent five evenings at the Fibre Reinforced Plastics workshop at Falmouth Marine School to complete their projects.
Pupil Jack King said the large workspace “is fantastic and so is being able to access the tools we need”.
“I’m so looking forward to taking my board to the beach and testing it out,” he added.
The students and staff involved paid for the materials and Falmouth Marine School lecture Simon Combe and STEM lead at Penryn College, Alex Childs, gave their time and expertise to support those making the boards.
“The facilities at Ponsharden are perfect for the project, a big, open purpose built space is essential for the use of these chemicals on that scale and it really wouldn’t have been possible without Simon and the Falmouth Marine Schools’s support”, commented Alex.
“We are already looking at new exciting projects that might see us working with Falmouth Marine School again, the students have a buzz about boat building and are much more aware of the courses they offer now. I know that the project has put the college on the radar for many of our year 10 students coming up towards their choices for college next year.”
Justin Olosunde, Head of Falmouth Marine School, said “it’s important that we support local schools and share our expert knowledge and facilities”.
“It also gives the students a chance to find out more about local courses available to them after they complete their GCSEs; alongside boatbuilding, our marine biology and marine engineering courses are popular STEAM choices,” he added.
