Muddy kids learn best, or that’s what recent research has shown, and with the rise in the number of forest schools, the demand for leaders in this skill is at an all-time high, according to leading trainer in Cornwall.
For those in the county wishing to develop their forest school skills and knowledge, Duchy College, Stoke Climsland is offering a free forest school training taster.
This three hour session, taking place on Tuesday 10th April from 10am, is ideal for teachers, teaching assistants, nursery leaders or woodland professions wishing to specialise in the popular teaching method.
Stephanie Smart, Forest School Leader for Duchy College said forest schools “offer a chance for children and adults to reconnect with nature, to build dens, light fires, climb trees and use tools in a supported environment”.
“As the positive links between the outdoor environment and good mental health also become clearer many colleges, schools and nurseries are putting Forest School on their curriculum and looking to recruit teachers and learning support staff with this qualification,” she continued.
“Focusing on outdoor teaching creates resilient, independent learners as a lot of forest school techniques develop curiosity and processes for answering your own questions. It’s excellent for ensuring children are physically active throughout the day and ideal for younger children who struggle to concentrate in the confines of a classroom.”
During the taster delegates will look at learning a woodland craft activity, a fire activity, group games and den building.
In recent years the number of forest schools and outdoor learning centres has rocketed in the UK with the unique teaching style breaking into the mainstream. So-called forest schools where children are encouraged to eat, sleep, learn and play outdoors have existed in Scandinavia since the 1950s.
“We have past students who free-lance or run sessions at primary schools, there are a variety of career options open to students following the Level 3 Forest School Leaders qualification,” Steph added.
