A local employee recently fulfilled a dream by representing Great Britain in Ibiza.
Foundation Learning Job Coach at Duchy College, Louisa Shaw, competed in the Aquathlon European Championships the ETU Multisport European Championship, where she completed a 1km open water swim and a 5km run in 26 degree heat.
“I always did competitive sport from a young age and achieved a high level for diving, however I narrowly missed out on competing for my country, “Louisa explains.
“I thought my chances of ever doing this were gone until I found out a few years ago about GB Age Group competitions.”
“I increased both my running and swimming and entered some local events a couple of years ago. Then I found out I had met the qualifying times for the Ibiza Championships,” Louisa continued.
“The next event is being held in Transylvania, Romania, which I have also qualified for.”
Louisa finished 16th in Ibiza out of 25 competitors in a time of 43 minutes and 36 seconds.
“The swim didn’t go to plan unfortunately, I got kicked in the head at the start and then a couple of people swam right over the top of me.
“For the run I didn’t feel great, I felt dreadful after the kick, but I’ll learn from my mistakes, I’ll be looking forward to the next time I compete.”
Louisa said she gives her students the same advice as she gives her own children.
“Never give up on your dreams, because if you work hard you will be amazed at what you can achieve,” she explained.
“My children saw me struggle in my race, but they also saw me not give up and flight through to the end even when things didn’t go to plan. I think if you can follow this advice you will do well.”
