The Cornwall College Group apprenticeships

A group of excited Year 6 students from Charlestown Primary School visited a local employer, Ocean Housing Group Ltd to find out about Apprenticeships. The trip was coordinated by Cornwall College Business (CCB).

Apprenticeships are becoming more popular with 25,000 vacancies advertised in the UK every day. Surprisingly only one in five businesses take on an apprentice of which 89% have reported that apprenticeships have helped their business improve the quality of their product or service.

One of those businesses is the Ocean Housing Group Ltd who are a registered provider and parent company for: Ocean Housing Ltd and Gilbert & Goode Ltd. They are committed to making a real contribution to Cornwall’s housing shortage by building new and affordable homes, for rent and shared ownership for local people.

Employing 230 members of staff, Ocean Housing Group currently support eight Apprentices in a diverse range of roles including; Business Administration, Electrical and Plumbing.

Frances Turner, Managing Director, Ocean Housing Group gave the students an overview of the business, followed by a tour giving them the opportunity to meet current and past apprentices.

Lesley Rush, HR Manager said:  “We were thrilled to be able to provide the opportunity for the children of Charlestown Primary School to visit Ocean and to see and hear about some of the different apprenticeship and career opportunities they may aspire to.”

Nikki White, Year 6 Teacher, Charlestown Primary School commented: “The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Ocean House and were amazed by how many areas of professions there were within one company. They were very interested in the work of the employees at Ocean Housing and has made them think about and consider job opportunities which could be available to them when they are older.”

Sally Foard, Director of Development and Adult Learning at The Cornwall College Group said: “We were delighted that Ocean Housing Group helped support this trip. Giving young people the opportunity to see for themselves how a business works and to meet past and current apprentices is inspiring.”

Sally continues: “There are many benefits for taking on an Apprentice including developing skilled, motivated and qualified workforce that increase productivity and your bottom line. With the developments of Trailblazers the employer in most cases will receive incentives that will provide financial return on their investment into an apprentice.”
