Young mum groups from Helston, St Blazey and Launceston have celebrated their achievements after successfully completing their year at Young Mums Will Achieve (YMWA).
YMWA is an award-winning two-day education and life skills course for pregnant young women and teenage mums aged between 14 and 19 years old.
Its primary objectives are to support mums back into mainstream education, employment and training whilst supporting the development of positive parenting and life skills.
Courtney Rowe attends the Helston Group and explained that she has “gained so many new experiences” that will help her with her future.
“I have made so many friends who will be friends for life. This course has helped me look forward to the future even more because I have gained new skills that will help me in many aspects of day to day life,” she explained.
“Being a young mum can be lonely at times and this course helps young mums come together to learn, socialise and support each other, letting each other know you are not alone in being a young mum.”
Heather Tabb, Young People Project Manager, said “The combination of professionalism, hands-on experience and embedded partnership working has been instrumental to the success of YMWA. Empowering the young mums by helping them to gain confidence and raise their self-esteem as well as gaining qualifications has started them on the road to a better future and better outcomes for their children.”
All mums are returning next year and more will be starting in September. There will be groups in Helston, St Blazey, Launceston and Bodmin with the hope to starting new courses in other areas such as Falmouth, Penzance, and Truro, dependent on numbers.
